Overview

The southwest Ethiopian Agricultural Research Institute (SWEARI) was established as Regional Research Institute, with 1 center transferred from SARI in 2014 E.C

EIAR made incredible efforts to build the regional capacity of doing agricultural research, produce, and introduce improved technologies focusing on fostering agricultural growth and development in the region. As a result, over the last two decades by Bonga agricultural research center, the release of improved technologies in crop, livestock, soils and water, forestry and agricultural mechanization have increased dramatically. To date, the contribution of improved agricultural technologies generated and introduced by SWEARI has become fundamental in the regional and national economy.

SWEARI is doing its level best to introduce and generate agricultural technologies while also contributing to meet the national demands of transforming Ethiopian agriculture.

Geographical Locations

The headquarters of SWEARI is located in Southwest Ethiopian People Regional State, Sheka Zone, Tepi Town (see location map). SWEARI has 2 research centers located in Bonga and Tarcha (see location map). These research centers are endowed with research setups that make them conducive and preferable for research endeavors.

Management

The Director General

The Director General is the Chief Executive Officer exercising all the powers vested on him/ her by establishment proclamation of the institute. The office of the Director General is organized by a secretary who assists him/her to carry out responsibilities of management matters related to research for development, finance and procurement and property management, audit, human resource management, planning monitoring and evaluation and all research directorates. The office also follows up matters and reports achievements to the Bureau of Agriculture and the relevant committees of the Council of Representatives.

The Director General seeks the collective advice of the Core and support processes as well as research center directors on matters related with research and support matters of strategic nature.
