Livestock is a key part of Ethiopia’s agriculture, contributing about 48% to the regional Agricultural GDP. However, per capita consumption of milk, meat, and eggs is low compared to global averages. To enhance livestock product supply, the government focuses on dairy, poultry, beef, and beekeeping through initiatives like ‘Lemat Tirufat’ and the ‘10 in 10’ development plan. The Livestock Research Directorate at SWEARI aims for quality research to support food security, generate foreign earnings, and create jobs. They have conducted numerous research projects, published many papers, and collaborated with local and international organizations. Livestock research launched 12 national research programs under its purview in order to realize its purposes.
